The Katonah Museum
of Art (KMA) invites you to join master puppeteer Hanne Tierney, who will perform her masterpiece How Wang-Fo was Saved in its entirety on Sunday, May 23 at 1:30 and 3:30pm in the Museum galleries.

{mosgoogle}Part of the Puppet Performance series, this event is free with Museum admission.

Part of the Museum’s current exhibition, The Art of Contemporary Puppet Theater, How Wang-Fo Was Saved is Tierney’s interpretation of an ancient Chinese legend celebrating the triumph of art over life. The legend tells the story of Wang-Fo, an elderly painter, whose pictures are more beautiful than life itself.  Forced by the Emperor to finish one last canvas before being executed for his lies, he first paints a lake, then draws a rowboat, and as the waters rise and fill the throne room, he climbs into the boat and rows off into the sunset. How Wang-Fo Was Saved is performed entirely by objects, which include bamboo fronds, stiffened robes, and glowing lanterns. The objects are brought to life through an ingenious and intricate system of counterweighted pulleys and transparent fishing line developed by Tierney.

Tierney is a performance artist who makes abstract theater without actors. She began performing in the early 1980s and has been seen at the Whitney and Guggenheim Museums, PS1 Contemporary Art
Center, and the Wadsworth Atheneum.  Tierney is currently the Artistic Director for FiveMyles (www.fivemyles.org), a performance and exhibition space in Brooklyn.
