Assemblywoman Galef Forum Looks at Making Local Courts More Efficient ~ Consolidation Could Mean Tax Savings~ Assemblywoman Sandy Galef will host a panel of judges, lawyers and judicial experts from the area for a conversation about local court consolidation, on Thursday, February 4th at 7:30 pm at Cortlandt Town Hall, 1 Heady Street, Cortlandt Manor. The experts include New York State 9th Judicial District Administrative Judge Alan D. Scheinkman, New York State Supreme Court Judge Francesca E. Connolly, Special Commission on the Future of New York State Courts’ Chief Counsel Elliot Moskowitz, and Fund for Modern Courts’ Deputy Executive Director and Director of Advocacy Denise Kronstadt. “There are 12 local courts in my Assembly District alone,” Galef says. “This is the time to determine if and how we can coordinate our court systems to develop savings,” she asserts. “It is critical for our courts to operate efficiently and doing so should be able to help the bottom line as well.” Administrative Judge Scheinkman said: “The city, town and village courts are the front-lines of our justice system. These are the courts that deal with the problems of every day life, from traffic infractions to landlord/tenant disputes, to small claims cases. The judiciary is committed to improving the safety, accessibility and efficiency of these courts. Our justice court facilities are, in too many cases, antiquated and, at times, there is duplication of effort between town and village courts. We need to carefully examine opportunities for court consolidation so that we can modernize our justice courts and, simultaneously, conserve taxpayer resources, with the goal of delivering quality justice at the lowest possible cost.” This forum is part of a continuing series of town hall-style meetings Galef has held which are intended to bring the community into the conversation about sharing services and reducing levels of government with the goal of achieving savings for taxpayers. Galef invites the public to join these esteemed judicial experts for this important and timely discussion on how local court consolidation could improve efficiency in the justice system and save taxpayers’ money.

The Ossining Public Library and The Taconic Postcard Club present "Hoopla OnThe Hudson" postcards of the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration Parade Floats during the month of January 2010 in the library's gallery. The 2009 year long Hudson-Fulton-Champlain festivities were inspired by the 1909 Hudson-Fulton Celebration when New York staged its own coming out party as it climbed in economic growth, expanded in population diversity and made a statement as an art and cultural capital. Along with Military and Naval Parades during the 1909 celebration, there were the History Parade and the Carnival Parade with floats designed to depict New York State's history. These floats were recorded on postcards of that time. On display is an exhibition of 72 postcard images of the floats and an official poster for the celebration. The exhibit is presented in coordination with the Croton Free Library, Croton Friends of History, and the Yorktown and Peekskill Museums and was made possible by a contribution from the New York State Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Commission.

Ossining Public Library’s Winter Film Series Presents – Rarely Screened Hitchcock: Every season is the season for a good film. This winter the Ossining Public Library film series presents films that are rarely screened Hitchcock films. People all over the world have been interested in Alfred Hitchcock films for a very long time. The enduring interest in Alfred Hitchcock’s films attests to his cinematic genius. Despite new revelations about his character quirks and darker impulses, the current series “Ten Hitchcock Masterpieces” at the Paramount in Peekskill and repeat summer programs at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville demonstrate the creative respect for Hitchcock’s motion pictures. The films chosen for the OPL winter series are rarely screened despite strong retrospective interest, very good reviews and unmistakable cinematic style. The movies are “Foreign Correspondent” (1940) starring Joel McCrea and Laraine Day scheduled for February 3rd; and “Saboteur” (1942) starring Robert Cummings and Priscilla Lane to be screened on March 3rd. These three features are all categorized as mystery thrillers. Though not shot in Cinemascope or starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, the films are noted for solid performances, excellent art direction and ingenious special effects. When viewed as a series, the works are manhunt yarns that rely on Hitchcock’s familiar theme of an innocent bystander who becomes involved in danger and intrigue until he encounters a woman who tries to save him. Hitchcock would repeat this formula in his later movies using top stars who were finally willing to make mystery thrillers after he achieved great box office success. The programs begin at 7 p.m. in the Budarz Theater. Refreshments will be served. The “Rarely Screened Hitchcock” series was curated by Bonnie Katz. The Ossining Public Library is a School District Library chartered by the State of New York to serve all residents of the Ossining School District. As a member of the Westchester Library System, it also provides services to a much larger community.
