The Greenburgh Public Library Foundation (GPLF) announces the inaugural Westchester County Amateur Photo Contest. The contest is believed to be the first of its kind in Westchester County as it maintains a focus on amateur adult and on high school student photographers. In fact, all entries into the contest must be from only those who reside in Westchester County and who are also true amateurs and do not earn a living now or in the past as a professional photographer. The contest will be held in the spring of each year beginning in 2010. The contest is made possible through a grant from the Howard and Ruth Jacobs Family to the Greenburgh Public Library Foundation.

The contest will be juried and prizes awarded to winners in two categories; amateur adults and high school students. In the amateur adult category, there will be a first prize of $500, second prize of $200 and third prize of $100. In the high school student category, there will be one prize of $100.

Photos selected to be in the juried competition will be judged by a panel of qualified photographers and will be placed on exhibit in the Howard and Ruth Jacobs Family Gallery in the Greenburgh Public Library, located at 300 Tarrytown Road, Elmsford, from May 3, 2010 through June 17, 2010. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at an award ceremony followed by a reception to be held on Saturday, May 16, 2010 at the Greenburgh Public Library. Full contest rules are available at www.greenburghlibrary.org/photocontest and at the Greenburgh Public Library. Submissions must be made digitally and must be received between April 1 and April 12, 2010. Certain restrictions do apply so applicants need to consult the contest rules before submitting their photographs.

Those interested in entering the contest can do so by submitting their photograph as a jpeg file to photocontest@greenburghlibrary.orgThis email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it in accordance with the official contest rules. Photographers whose work is selected to be in the contest will be charged a $5.00 contest entry fee. However, the fee will be waived for high school photographers.

Eugenie Contrata, Library Director, said, “We’re so pleased that the Greenburgh Library Foundation has chosen to host The Westchester County Amateur Photo Contest at the Greenburgh Public Library and we’re excited to be at the forefront of what we hope will become the premier annual amateur photography contest in Westchester County, further enhancing the value of our library to our community”.
