White Plains Hospital Center (WPHC) will be offering the following classes, events and support groups during the month of November.
Events are held at White Plains Hospital Center, 41 East Post Road, White Plains, NY, unless otherwise noted. SPECIAL EVENTS
Beautiful Hand-Made Knits on Sale
Hand-made hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, afghans, baby blankets, pet sweaters and more will be on sale in the Hospital Lobby on November 2nd, 10th, 11th, and 20th from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. All items are created by the Knitwits, the Hospital’s talented volunteer knitting group, and proceeds from the sales will benefit the Hospital.  Novelty item: fingerless gloves. BLOOD DRIVES
Blood Donor Center
The Blood Donor Center is open every weekday 8:45 am – 4:00 pm.  Saturday hours are available.  Donors must be 17 – 75 years of age, in good health and weigh at least 110 lbs.  Appointments are recommended. Call 914-681-1056.

FREE SCREENINGS
Blood Pressure Screening
Sponsored by the Auxiliary of WPHC, a free blood pressure screening is available every third Wednesday of the month, November 18th, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, in the Hospital Lobby. For further information, call 914-681-1225.

Health Check
A free screening program in select locations throughout the community makes nurses available to answer health questions and perform free blood pressure and blood sugar testing.  Screenings will take place at:

Community Room, 76 South Lexington Ave, White Plains, the first Wednesday of every month starting November 4th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm
167-169 Terrace Avenue, Port Chester, the second Wednesday of every month starting November 11th, 11:00 am- 12:30 pm.
10 Drew Street, Port Chester, the third Wednesday of every month starting November 18th, 1:00- 2:30 pm.

SUPPORT GROUPS
New Support Group
Healthy Living for Life Support Group
A FREE Monthly Group for anyone who is having difficulty trying to maintain a healthy weight.  All ages are welcome for open and frank discussions about weight loss, diets, meal preparation, exercise, and more.  Exchange ideas and resources with others who understand how you feel.  A White Plains Hospital Center registered nurse will facilitate these meetings.  Also, experts will provide mini-educational lectures on topics related to weight management.  Meets 3rd Tuesday of every month, 6:00-7:00 PM in the White Plains Hospital Center Auditorium unless otherwise noted.
November 17th: “Walk Your Way to Fit: Techniques and Proper Footwear”

Caregiver Resource & Support Group
This program, sponsored by the WPHC Department of Senior Services, provides information and support to individuals caring for older adults.  A geriatric professional facilitates the group which meets on the last Wednesday of the month, November 25th, from 6:00 -7:30 pm, at 69 East Post Road. Heart Club-
The Heart Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month, on November 3rd at 7:00 pm in Jazzman’s Café. The Heart Club provides educational lectures for heart patients, families and friends. Sessions are presented by physicians and other health care personnel. Free blood pressure screenings are available upon request after each meeting. For more information, call 914-681-1037.

Huntington’s Disease Caregivers Support Group
Exchange ideas and resources with others who understand how you feel. Meets on the last Wednesday of every month, Wednesday November 25th at 5:30 pm in the WPHC Medical Library. To register or for more information, call 203-219-6963.

Ostomy Support Group
A support group for ostomy patients and those with related intestinal disorders. All ages are welcome for open and frank discussions of life as an “ostomate” in a casual setting. The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month, November 17th, at 7:30 pm in the Medical Library. Parenting Group
An interactive group in a supportive atmosphere for parents to discuss the challenges of raising children. Meets Fridays at 10:00 am. Call Betsy Osman, Ph.D. at 914-681-2209 for details.

Perinatal Bereavement Support Group
Free support group for those who have lost a pregnancy at any stage or have had an infant die. Grandparents are also welcome.  Meets in the back of Jazzman’s Café in the Main Lobby.  For dates, times and more information, please call 914-681-2LOS (2567).

Stroke Support Group- Topic How Health Savvy Are You?
The Stroke Support Group will meet Thursday November 12th from 11:00am – 12:00pm, in the Centennial Room at White Plains Hospital Center.  Registration is recommended, and newcomers are always welcome.  For meeting dates call 914-681-1160 or our Stroke Hotline (914) 681-2615 for the most up-to-date information.

THE ANXIETY AND PHOBIA TREATMENT CENTER
WPHC’s Anxiety and Phobia Treatment center is the first hospital-based center of its kind in the country—providing groundbreaking therapies and programs since 1971. For details on the programs listed below, call 914-681-1038.            

Anxiety & Phobia Support Groups
Ongoing support groups are held for people with phobias, panic attacks and anxiety disorders.  Anxiety and Phobia Support Group meets Wednesdays at 7:00 pm, cost is $30 per meeting; or Wednesday at 12:00 pm, cost is $20 per meeting.  Sessions meet in room 4310 at the Hospital.  Call 914-681-1038 for registration or additional information.

Health Anxiety Program
A six-week program for people with an exaggerated fear of physical illness and who worry constantly about their health. Led by Martin Diner, MD. The program will begin to meet Monday November 2cnd at 7:00 pm. Call 681-1038 for more information.

Obsessive Compulsive Support Group
Learn how to use cognitive-behavioral and yoga relaxation techniques to manage and overcome obsessions and compulsions in a supportive environment. Group meets Saturdays, from 11:00 am- 12:30 noon. The cost is $20 per session and sessions are held in room 4310 at the Hospital. Call 914-681-1038 for registration or more information.

Phobia Workshops
Participate in nine weekly group meetings with a professional, and seven one-hour practice sessions with a phobia counselor. The workshop will begin Wednesday November 11th at 6:00 pm. Overcome fears and phobias using a cognitive behavioral and supportive exposure approach. Documented 92% success rate. Please call 681-1038 for more information.

Public Speaking/Social Anxiety Program
Weekly meetings focused on social anxiety and public speaking. Work at your own pace, attempting manageable yet challenging exercises without pressure to perform. With hard work and with our systematic approach, confidence and ability will dramatically increase. Group meets Thursdays at 5:30 pm. Child Passenger Safety Program
A program offered by White Plains Hospital Center and the Greenburgh Police Department with the intention to educate parents and caregivers on car seat safety, injury prevention, and health promotion, and to ensure that babies and children are correctly and safely secured while traveling in a motor vehicle. Last year the child seat safety program inspected over 1400 car seats and only 10 were installed correctly!

Child Passenger Safety Seminar & Inspection:
Parents and caregivers can sign up for this free program- held on the first Tuesday of every month, November 3rd at 7:00 pm to learn more about child passenger safety and proper installation. Call 914-681-2444 to register.

Child Safety Seat Check
Experts are available to check your car seat for free on the first and third Saturdays. November 7th and November 21st from 11:00 A.M to 2:00 P.M. at the Greenburgh Police Department Child Seat Inspection Station at 11 Hillside Avenue. No appointments are necessary.

Mall Walkers
Walk for fitness and fun!  This group meets three times a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9:00 – 10:00 am, at the Galleria Mall, Fashion Level 2.  Participants walk at their own pace in an environment supervised by WPHC health care professionals.  This program is free. Newcomers should call 914-681-1249 for more information.

Voice Care Emergency Response
A two-way emergency response system for your home that offers a direct link to help in case of an emergency, 24 hours a day. Discounts are available to HealthAccess members. Call 914-681-1249 for more information.

Cancer Genetics Program
White Plains Hospital Center offers genetic counseling to individuals with a personal or family history of cancer. The aim is to provide clear, relevant information regarding cancer risks and to identify individuals at risk for hereditary cancers. Counselors are available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday or Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Call 914-681-2873 for more information and referrals.

The Men’s Health Forum
If you or your spouse has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, is currently in treatment, or has completed treatment, this forum is for you. Each month a guest speaker discusses various health topics related to prostate cancer. Following the lecture, spouses meet separately with a volunteer family support person. The group meets on the third Thursday of every month, November 19th, at 7:00pm. Call 914-681-2727 for dates and times.

Yoga
Interactive Yoga Therapy combines the timeless insights of yoga with the latest advances in mind and body health. Meets Tuesday evenings. Starts October 27th till December 22nd.Please call 914-681-2701 for more information or to register for the class. Fee $80.

Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer
A support group for those who suffer from the consequences of cancer of the head or neck.  The group meets on the third Thursday of every month, November 19th in the third floor conference room, Dickstein Center, 2-4 Longview Ave., White Plains, NY. Call 914-681-2701 for more information.

White Plains Hospital Center Piggy Bank Thrift Store

Sponsored by the Auxiliary of White Plains Hospital Center, the Piggy Bank sells new and gently-used women’s and children’s clothing at discount prices, and sales benefit various programs at WPHC.
